Silenced Genes
Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Scott Holmes works with graduate students Kristen Martins-Taylor (foreground) and Minakshi Poddar on the molecular genetics of gene silencing. For normal development to occur in multicellular organisms, each cell needs to express certain genes but repress—or silence—other genes not needed by that particular cell type. Holmes’ research group studies the mechanism of silencing in budding yeast cells, with funding from the National Science Foundation.
Martins-Taylor received her doctoral degree in the spring and is currently conducting stem cell research at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Poddar is pursuing a master’s degree.
